Fortescue Bay to Cape Pillar bushwalk.
In the view of Tyrone Thomas (100 Walks in Tasmania) Cape Pillar is "the best scenic feature on the Tasmanian Coast". The sheer cliffs are up to 300m high and fluted like organ-pipes - a common characteristic of the Jurassic dolerite from which they are formed.
At the end are a number of striking features such as Cathedral Rock, The Blade, the Chasm and, not least, Tasman Island, just 500 metres away across a turbulent strait. Vegetation also varies along the way and includes species unique to the area. Water can be scarce so be prepared to carry plenty. Further details of the walk can be found in Thomas's book or Peninsula Tracks.
